I've often been left rather perplexed at 'only children' commentary right before my ears, indeed from those unaware I myself am one of these often seemingly resilient and fiercely independent modern society phenomena.


I've also often witnessed quite bewildering behaviour and staggering demands from children belonging to larger broods...the hypothesis: it's not how many buns you have in the oven, rather how they're cooked & preserved.



Growing up an 'only child', Piper is accustomed to the regular negative prejudices surrounding the term. However, she's here to say it's not how many kids are in the family, but how they're raised which makes a difference.



In celebration of slighted 'only children' across the globe, Piper's highly original, witty solo programme disassembles this phenomenon of modern society, her creativity taking full flight in a post-modern musical ode.



A collection of recorded audio interviews with 'only children' throughout her travels forms the programme's compositional basis. Piper displays a vast array of intelligent tonal treatments, witty musical statements and extended perceptions of what her instruments are capable of.



Audiences warm to Piper's personal approach to expression through her instruments. Piper's sound can transport her audience to a place of pure feeling and being. A moment to be experienced fully in a world coloured by rich sound.

Cycles of existence and renewed understanding: moonlight, sunrise, winter, spring, ebb and flow - all agents of transformation, providing only fleeting moments of stability in their markings of the day and life. Reality can change with the sweep of a breeze and so our music must sing another tune.



Eastern philosophies have been marked by their attention to the flow of life for centuries. This is also reflected in the cyclical nature of many of their traditional forms of music - an influence on Piper's sensitive and creative arrangements for this programme.



Composed and improvised elements form to provide short forays into the textures, sound worlds and beauty of Piper's reed instruments. Their musical possibilities highlighting the contrast, starkness, strength and awe-inspiring virtues of our most precious resource: nature.



Well suited to unusual locations. Castles, churches, caves and other natural settings with good acoustics are examples of previous locations. This programme is offered in varying lengths to suit the needs of varying locations.
